meth|ane «MEHTH ayn», noun.
a colorless, odorless, flammable gas, the simplest of the hydrocarbons, and commercially important as a fuel; marsh gas. Methane is formed naturally by the decomposition of plant or other organic matter in marshes, petroleum wells, volcanoes, and coal mines. It is the principal constituent of natural gas and of firedamp in coal mines. Formula: CH4
